Does your company have a writing-improvement program for staff members?

Consider this: The consequences of poor writing in business can be severe.
When communications are sloppy, misleading or hard to digest, a company’s image and performance suffer.  Inevitably, the bottom line suffers as well.

Today's expectation for speed in communications pressures employees to respond quickly to internal and external communications.  As a result, quality often gives way to a quick response.  That's an unacceptable trade-off.

What's more, the
trend toward flatter organizations has removed a traditional level of editing, and despite the importance of writing, most companies fail to offer any training or coaching.

If your company doesn't have a writing improvement program, here's a quick and certain way to catch up.

Introductory Workshop Tuesday Nov. 9
An upcoming workshop will concentrate on five segments of importance to writers in the business world:

  • Audience: Writing is governed by who is reading.
  • Storytelling: It's the essential template to use when organizing your writing.
  • Rhythm: The music of good writing helps convey the message.
  • Applications: Business writing requires adaptation to different objectives and formats.
  • Tactical Tips: The session is filled with practical ideas to improve writing.
Participants will leave the workshop:
  • Sensitized to the standards and practices of good writing
  • Confident of their new understanding about how to write more competently
  • Energized to maintain their own efforts to improve
The half-day program –– as entertaining as it is instructive –– include hands-on exercises, dramatic readings and two valuable resources to take back:
  • "Tips on Writing Well," straight-forward advice on bringing your writing to the next level of quality.
  • "Words to Watch," a glossary of words that confound even the most experienced writers.
The next session will be held at The Georgian Club (100 Galleria Parkway, Suite 1700, Atlanta) Nov. 9 from 8:30 to 11 a.m.  The registration fee is $175 per person.  Enrollment will be limited to 12 participants.

A Writing Appraisal
For companies already committed to better writing or those considering an improvement program, a good first step is a Writing Appraisal in which we evaluate for accuracy and effectiveness a sampling of a company's work ranging from e-mail messages and reports to contacts with customers.  Is the writing concise and well crafted?  Does it meet commonly accepted standards for grammar and syntax?  Does the writing convey its intended meaning with clarity and efficiency?

Of special interest are the templates many companies use to answer customer inquiries or complaints.

Included in the Appraisal is a Survey of a cross section of employees to determine how much time is spent writing on a typical day.  We find that most companies underestimate how much writing is actually done by employees at all levels.

The final step is a Summary Report reviewing the findings and making recommendations.  Where we see quality writing, we praise the company's efforts and acknowledge its competence and consistency.  Where we see a need for improvement, we recommend next steps.

The fee for a Writing Appraisal and Survey is $750.
